I’m Nischal, Product Manager on the Chef team and I’m thrilled to introduce something we’ve been quietly building and are finally ready to share with you: Opsmith, a new way to turn your operational intent into automation that runs seamlessly across your infrastructure.
For anyone who has ever thought, “I know exactly what I want to do, but turning that into scripts, cookbooks or controls takes too long,” Opsmith is designed for you.
What Is Opsmith?
Opsmith is an AI-powered operational assistant that helps you:
- Describe what you want to accomplish
- Receive high-quality automation artifacts generated automatically
- Validate and run those artifacts in secure sandboxes
- Deploy confidently into your environment
The goal is simple: reduce the time and friction between intent and execution, empowering teams to move faster with fewer manual steps.

What’s Supported Today?
The current Alpha release includes features focused on core operational workflows:
- Generate Bash scripts based on your operational intent
- Run and test those scripts safely in Linux sandboxes
This allows you to move from requirements to automation to validation in minutes.
Coming Soon
We’re already working on expanding the capabilities of Opsmith, which include:
- PowerShell script generation
- Windows sandbox support
- Chef cookbook generation
- InSpec control and profile generation
These additions will move Opsmith beyond script automation into full-stack infrastructure workflows.
