Chef Infra Client 18 Generally Available

We are happy to announce that the latest version of Chef Infra Client, 18, is now released! The Release Candidate was released earlier this month and received lots of feedback and interest. The stable 18 build now contains additional crucial pull requests provided by our users merged into it.

With this new version, all users can run Infra Client on Ruby 3.1. Users can utilize sophisticated REST support and advanced resources in their process. We are also excited to see the secrets management helpers being used by our users and integrate with their existing secrets management providers. This major version upgrade also introduces a change making unified mode as a default for custom resources. We see tremendous use in troubleshooting failures in custom resources because of this change. Chef Infra Client 18 includes the stop support for legacy operating systems and platforms while adding support for some new ones.

Shortly before the Chef final GA build of Client 18 an issue was discovered with FIPS support for windows. We are currently investigating the root cause and correcting the issue. However please note FIPS support will not be available in the initial GA (18.0) version for Windows (all versions). We have prioritized the remediation for this issue and FIPS support will be released in the next minor version of Chef Infra Client 18.1. The date of issuance for Chef Infra Client 18.1 with FIPS support is under review and will be updated on all major communication channels when established. Kindly watch out for our future communications in this regard.

Please bear in mind that there is no change in support plans and end-of-life timelines of Infra Client 16 and 17. They will continue to remain the same as announced earlier. Infra Client 16 will be treated as end-of-life software starting November 30th, 2022. Please plan your upgrade to a higher version for receiving continued support for software running on your infrastructure. We are indebted to our users who participated in making updates to Chef Infra Client 18 ever since we announced a departure in the release process to involve them. Working with such a highly participative user base has been a tremendous opportunity to ensure the product is of robust quality. The excitement is infectious, and we look forward to releasing more features soon. We are looking forward to more discussions over slack and discourse. A big thank you to all our users!
